The curriculum at Camp Hill is based firmly on the principle that mathematics is a beautiful subject which often provides a means to model the real world. With this in mind, there is a considerable (but not exclusive) emphasis at all levels on the practical applications of mathematics. This relationship is two-way: mathematical ideas are approached concretely through contexts in the real world which illustrate them, and mathematics is applied to the understanding of phenomena and the solution of problems arising from real contexts.

The department is fortunate to have so many well qualified teachers, who love their subject, delivering the curriculum and we operate as a very strong team. The approach the department takes in developing young mathematicians was graded outstanding during a department Ofsted in March 2011. Our methodology has subsequently been used as an Ofsted case study, exemplifying good practice in the delivery of mathematics to talented students.

We make extensive use of UKMT individual and team challenges at all ages and our students have been, and are, very successful. In 2010, two of our students represented the UK in the International Mathematical Olympiad, an incredible honour for any school. In addition to this feat, our students frequently qualify for follow up rounds, aimed at the best students nationally and many boys have received invites to Summer schools and training camps. Furthermore, our teams have regularly qualified for the National Finals of the UKMT team competitions, with both our senior and junior teams performing consistently well.


Key Stage 3

Throughout KS3 the pupils are taught in their four forms (unsetted), with 6 hours (lessons) contact time per fortnight in years 7 & 8 and 5 hours contact time per fortnight in year 9. Their main resources are the Framework Extension Maths texts. Details of the course are given in the comprehensive KS3 schemes of work.

Key Stage 4

At this level the pupils are taught in ability sets. Contact time is 6 hours (lessons per fortnight in both Years 10 & 11. The pupils’ allocation to these sets is based on their ability shown during the previous year and in particular in their Year 9 examination. Since pupils mature at different rates, provision is made to adjust this setting at the end of Year 10. Occasionally, after consultation between staff, pupil and parents, a pupil may move sets during the school year to one more suited to his ability and rate of progress. The main resources are OCR Mathematics for GCSE B and the OCR Additional Maths texts.

Post 16

Mathematics is a popular Sixth Form choice at Camp Hill and is taken to A2 Level by about 100 pupils each year. Many of our students make direct and indirect use of their Mathematics A level at University by studying subjects such as Maths, Engineering, Physics, Chemistry & Economics.

Maths A Level groups are generally each taught by one teacher (the further maths groups by two) who carries them through both years. The groups work roughly in parallel following the same specification order.

The government have mandated a totally new structure for Mathematics and Further Mathematics A levels from September 2017.

AS & A2 Mathematics
Year 12: 4 groups, 9 hours (lessons) per fortnight
Year 13: 4 groups, 9 hours (lessons) per fortnight

Further Mathematics
Year 12: 2 groups, 14 hours (lessons) per fortnight
Year 13: 2 groups, 14 hours (lessons) per fortnight
